the scars of being thrown out
"The idea of an actor dancing to a Bowie song is not enough. The actor needs to be able to speak with his body." (Leos Carax)*1
What makes ``Annette'' such an exceptional movie is the presence of Adam Driver, who gives a career-high performance. The flesh and blood exposed, the thick muscular shape of the chest. Like Denis Lavant, Leos Carax brings Adam Driver to his bare bones. Henry is a tall man with an inner soul that he cannot control. Henry's body appears to be driven by anger. It might be a good idea to refer to anger as a "curse."
Henry is throwing himself at the camera. The thrown body acquires an unknown language through gestures. This is where the language of film as hieroglyphs is born. The sound picked up by the waving microphone itself becomes a language expressing emotion. Cinematographer Caroline Champetier said of Adam Driver's contribution to the film:

"Adam Driver chose to interpret Henry darkly. It's his interpretation. American actors take responsibility for their performance. It's not necessarily the same in France. I think it was really Adam's choice to make the character so dark." (Caroline Champetier)*2
A body that becomes a Monster. Images from past movies overlap as Henry playfully approaches Anne while making monster gestures. This is the image of Guillaume Depardieu, the beautiful young man who playfully gestured like a Monster to Catherine Deneuve in `` Pola X ,'' saying, ``What if I was ugly?'' In ``Pola And the way Henry throws his bare body out resonates with Baby Annette. An ``imperfect'' baby was chosen that does not hide even the cracks and conveys the material of the puppet. Like the birthmark on Henry's right cheek, Annette's figure is already damaged.
Anne holds Annette and dances. Its insanely fast rotation is insane. Marion Cotillard's performance here is fantastic. However, the crazy spinning dance in which Anne cradles Annette is repeated by Henry's dance on the ship. A rotation so fast that it throws off the opponent. She has a mirror image relationship with the puppet Annette.
"We tried to portray her realistically. In the lighting, we looked for skin tones that resemble those of a real child. Of course, you can tell that she's a puppet. But Leos and I were all fooled with silicone and other things. I didn't want to. It's more poetic, more charming, and more courageous to shoot with real puppets and real puppeteers."
