``The crowd always laughs at you, but for one day it shows you sympathy.'' ``You never know how big a crowd is, but the moment you step inside it reveals itself.'' ( The Crowd / King Directed by Vidor/1928)
Léos Carax's Annette(21) begins with Edouard- Léon: The Professional Scott de Martinville's ``By the Light of the Moon,'' followed by a voiceover admonishing the audience to ``hold your breath.'' Apichatpong Weerasethakul also cited this in his ` `Memoria '' (21), and it was the world's first recorded human singing voice. At the beginning, Leos Carax shows that he is returning to the ``motivation'' that drives him. It is the same as ` `Holy Motors '' (12), which returns to the ``motivation'' of making movies and the principles that drive movies, by quoting ``The Photographic Gun'' by Etienne-Jules Marais. The protagonists of Leos Carax's films pursue strong ``motivations'' that seem to push up from within their bodies, and they always end up giving up on them.
“Annette” preview
The strength and fragility of the actor's face and body exposed on screen. Beauty beckons the fear of facing imperfection. In ``Annette,'' it erodes not only her body, but also her singing voice. Through the recording of the camera, which is the line of sight, the sense of balance between inside and outside gradually disappears. The voice that was supposed to be on the inside is being eroded by the crowd on the outside. My inner voice is eroded by fear. Like a black shadow creeping into the moonlight.
Henry (Adam Driver), a stand-up comedian who is becoming more and more Monster, is driven by fear. Anne (Marion Cotillard), a popular opera singer, repeatedly whispers "I'm scared" on stage and in A Very Private Affair. Annette, the baby and puppet born to the couple, reigns as the very symbol of imperfect beauty. What is the threat that lurks in their hearts? Anne sings heartfelt lyrics on stage.
“I’m scared/I wonder why/Where’s the starlight/I’m scared of you/Something deep in those eyes.”
These words echo the line by Michel Piccoli from Holy Motors: ``Beauty lies deep in the eyes of the beholder. But what if there's no one to behold?''
