A classic among classics! 5 musical movies you should know about
Musical movies have a very long history, and were already produced in Hollywood in the 1930s. There are many films that have been made into hits after being staged on Broadway. Many of the works are extremely worth seeing, combining the visual expressions unique to movies with music. Here we have compiled a list of five classic musicals that we recommend. If you're worried about which musical movie to watch first, try these movies first.
“The Wizard of Oz” (39) Director: Victor Fleming 112 minutes
A work released in 1939 at the dawn of musical films. ``Somewhere Over the Rainbow'' sung by Judy Garland, who plays the main character Dorothy, is very famous, and I'm sure everyone has heard it at least once. What is unique about this movie is that when Dorothy is in her hometown of Kansas, she is in black and white, while in the land of Oz, she is in color. This production makes the Land of Oz even more fantastical and leaves a vivid impression on the audience. Characters such as the Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, and Wimpy Lion have attractive handmade designs that differ from CG. A work that warms your heart when you see it.

"My Fair Lady" (64) Director: George Cukor 55 minutes
A musical film that is also known as a masterpiece by the famous actor Audrey Hepburn. Eliza is a flower girl who was born in a downtown area and speaks in a rough manner, and Professor Higgins, a linguist, makes a bet with his friend whether she can become a full-fledged lady. It depicts the interaction between the two in a comical way. Particular points of interest are Professor Higgins' change of state of mind, who at first only saw him as a gamble, and Eliza's gradual refinement of beauty. The gorgeous dress style that Hepburn shows off in the film is truly charming, and it's no wonder that it won eight Academy Awards, including Best Costume Design.
"Singin' in the Rain" (52) Director: Gene Kelly, Stanley Donen 103 minutes
American movie released in 1952. Starring Gene Kelly, a top star in the musical world, this is a masterpiece among masterpieces that is known as the standard for musical movies themselves. The film depicts the love lives of stars against the backdrop of a turning point in film technology, which began to shift from silent films to talkies. The scene in which Don, played by Gene Kelly, sings about his feelings for his girlfriend, Cathy, is very famous. The image of them singing and tap dancing in the pouring rain has been parodied in many movies. It is also often used as a figure skating program song, and is widely loved across generations.

A masterpiece musical film released in 1961. This is a story based on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, set in modern New York, and depicts the forbidden love between opposing groups of juvenile delinquents and the men and women who belong to each group. ``Tonight,'' a song sung on the emergency staircase that is a modern take on the balcony scene from ``Romeo and Juliet,'' is widely known. George Chakiris, who played the heroine Maria's older brother Bernardo, became famous with this movie and expanded his career to European films.

“The Phantom of the Opera” (04) Director: Joel Schumacher 143 minutes
An American movie released in 2004. The original story is based on the novel of the same name by French author Gaston Leroux, but the story is based on the musical that was a big hit like ``Les Misérables.'' The numbers sung in the film are all famous songs written by master Andrew Lloyd Webber. Set in the Paris Opera House at the end of the 19th century, the film delicately and mysteriously depicts the sad love triangle between Christine, a gifted singer, her childhood friend Raoul, the Viscount, and the Phantom who lives in the basement of the Opera House. The opening and masquerade ball scenes are gorgeous, unique to movies, and keep the audience glued to the screen.
