The pleasure of being led to a strange world

Guillermo del Toro. Many movie fans will be thrilled when they hear or see that name. In his career so far, he has continued to release many monsters and masterpieces with a so-called otaku approach, but in 2017, `` The Shape of Water '' won the Academy Award for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Art Design, It won four composition awards. In other words, he is an otaku and a master. While injecting plenty of maniac material that he loves, he uses his wealth of knowledge to achieve a profound flavor as a movie. I think ``Nightmare Alley'' is where Guillermo's unique qualities are achieved at the ultimate level.

The greatest appeal of Guillermo del Toro's films is the joy and ecstasy of being lured into a strange, mysterious world. For example, it's like the feeling you get when you're a child and become obsessed with scary picture books and fairy tales. Guillermo's films bring back the indescribable feeling of trembling as an adult. The first half of ``Nightmare Alley'' lets you fully enjoy the world of a scary picture book.

The setting is the world of carnival in the 1930s. There are many strange and suspicious spectacles, such as a spiritual medium who can see dead people and a woman who runs electricity through her entire body... As we watch the movie, we become fascinated by this mysterious world, along with Stan, the drifter protagonist who sneaks into it. The nostalgic art that recreates the time is also perfect for the atmosphere. The most shocking part is the show of the ``beast men (geeks)'' who try to devour chickens alive, stimulating you on a visceral level.

However, the unrealistic elements of ghosts, robots, mermaids, and monsters that have symbolized Guillermo's films up until now are weak, and the film only plays the role of real people leading to a ``scary fairy tale.'' Quietly and gradually, you will be immersed in a mysterious world.
