Reborn as a Hollywood star

Sidney Lumet's dramatization is also very clear. What I was particularly impressed with was the use of sound effects. In the first scene, a backlit shot of Paul Newman gulping down a drink, only the loud sound of pinballs fills the area. In the final scene, where Paul Newman accepts a phone call from Charlotte Rampling with a heartbroken expression, the only sound is the phone ringing. It is said that he created it). By intentionally not using a score, the mellow sentimentality is eliminated, and the production is brilliant, highlighting the loneliness of an elderly man.

Polish cinematographer Andrzej Bartkowiak's camera work, which vividly captures the dark tones of winter-drenched Boston, is wonderful, and Johnny Mandel's restrained emotional accompaniment is also moving. He is flanked by two familiar veterans, Edward Binns, who played Juror No. 6 in Sidney Lumet's breakthrough film 12 Angry Men (1957), and Jack Warden, who played Juror No. 7. The casting is perfect, with James Mason playing the hostile lawyer and Charlotte Rampling playing the mysterious beauty.

Unfortunately, although the film was nominated for five Academy Awards (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Adapted Screenplay), it did not win any. Paul Newman, who was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for the sixth time, lost out to Ben Kingsley for `` Gandhi '' (1982). However, there is no doubt that he broke new ground with this movie.

At the 59th Academy Awards in 1987, he won the coveted Best Actor award for his performance in The Color of Money (1986). Just as an elderly alcoholic lawyer was reborn after going through a medical malpractice lawsuit, he too was reborn as a Hollywood star.
