A macaroni western directly descended from the “Dollar Box Trilogy”

``Two Mules for Sister Sara'' (1970) opens with this scene. Hogan, a drifter played by Clint Eastwood, comes across a naked woman about to be attacked by three roughnecks. Hogan quickly dispatches the villains with his gun skills. The woman conveying her gratitude turns out to be a nun who devotes herself to missionary work in Mexico...

What surprised me was that Sister Sarah was played by Shirley MacLaine. She has a strong impression of romantic comedies such as ``I'll Lend You the Key to My Apartment '' (60) and `` Only You Tonight '' (63), but now she's starring in a western drama set in Mexico just after the Civil War. Moreover, seeing Clint Eastwood appear in a Western movie in which he plays the usual Eastwood with his usual Buddha face, I felt a strange feeling, as if world lines that should never intersect had intersected. It happened.

The setting of a silent, unidentified Jack Reacher is reminiscent of Eastwood's "Dramatic Trilogy" of " A Fistful of Dollars " (1964), "For a Few For a Few Dollars More The Good, the Bad and the Ugly " (1966). Hogan's gun belt and holster are the same as those he wore in the "Dramatic Trilogy" as "The Man with No Name". Moreover, the music for this film is composed by Ennio Morricone, who was famous for composing the trilogy. Although the director is Don Siegel, not Sergio Leone, "High Noon" functions as a spaghetti western in the same vein as the "Two Mules for Sister Sara Trilogy". What's more, the fact that Shirley MacLaine is on screen makes me feel an indescribable sense of incongruity.

However, in conclusion, this work is a heartwarming Western drama that fully displays her coquettish charm. Even Eastwood, who is usually a Buddha-like figure, is completely emasculated by his charm. Through Shirley MacLaine's magic, this macaroni western, which is a direct descendant of the ``Dollar Trilogy,'' has been transformed into a romantic comedy with a lot of interesting exchanges.
