Ah, I don't know which is which anymore. The Japanese titles of Spaghetti Westerns throw the audience into confusion and chaos. However, among them, the third film in the "Dollar Trilogy" by director Sergio Leone and Clint Eastwood, "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly," is the best. In this article, I would like to write about this film, which I love so much.

“The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” preview

Although it is treated as a sequel, the original title is "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" and it is an independent film with no direct connection to "For a Few Dollars More". Set in 1862 during the Civil War, Joe (the good guy) played by Clint Eastwood, Setenza (the bad guy) played by Lee Van Cleef, and Tuco (the scum) played by Eli Wallach plot to get their hands on a hidden gold nugget, in this thrilling action-packed film. Let's quote Sergio Leone's comment.

"I came up with this work while I was thinking about the story of ' For a Few Dollars More'... I've always thought that distinctions like 'good guy,' 'bad guy,' and 'violent guy' don't exist in an absolute, fundamental sense. I thought it would be interesting to use the Western style to remove the mystery of these adjectives." (Quoted from an interview with Sergio Leone*)

A picaresque romance about three outlaws on a treasure hunt in the midst of the Civil War. The idea caught the eye of the American film company United Artists. At the time, "For a Few Dollars More" was a massive hit that broke box office records. Sergio Leone had suddenly risen to fame as a hit maker, and United Artists was determined to acquire the distribution rights to his next film. As a result of negotiations, Leone was able to secure an unprecedented production budget of $1.2 million. With this generous budget, filming for "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" began.
