"Red Rocket" synopsis

Mikey used to be a porn actor who "missed out on the porn industry's Academy Awards five times," but now he's depressed and penniless and has returned to his hometown of Texas. Despite the disapproval of his estranged wife, Lexi, and mother-in-law, Lil, he manages to move in with them, but due to a 17-year hiatus, he has no job. One day, while he was trying to make ends meet by selling marijuana through his old business, he met a girl who worked at a donut shop and dreamed of a comeback...

The triumphant return of a porn star

The triumphant return of the prodigal son. A former porn star returns to her hometown of Texas City from the glamorous Los Angeles. A frank and unpleasant person. Or an incredibly bright scumbag. Mikey Saber (Simon Rex), whose rapid-fire words can make everyone cringe, brags about his subscriber count, awards, and 2,000 porn appearances. The reason for Mikey's return to his hometown is never made clear, but the fact that he returned with only $22 in his possession makes it possible to understand the circumstances. All the bravado supports this "antihero"'s heart. Mikey is a dangerous and dangerous person through and through. However, his natural brightness makes him a person you can't hate.

As with his previous works, Sean Baker spotlights characters on the fringes of society. We pass people like Mikey at laundromats and convenience stores. You may not get to know each other deeply, but you're definitely someone you'll cross paths with at some point. Sean Baker's attitude is consistent. To portray a person who lives his or her life while feeling some sort of indebtedness or embarrassment towards society. Even Mikey, who is extremely cheerful, lives his life feeling a sense of indebtedness for being a porn star.

Mikey returns to his hometown with the help of his wife, Lexi (Bree Elrod), a former porn actress whose divorce has not been finalized. The "surprise" at the door is never welcomed by Lexi. Upon Mikey's sudden return, Lexi and her mother freely declare, "Saiaku!" Mikey is shameless and tries to move into Lexi's house. Mikey is chased out of the premises. There is an argument between Mikey, who is outside the premises, and Lexi, who is inside the premises. The fun of this work is condensed in this scene where the two are only a few meters apart. Lexi is able to kick Mikey off the property, but she can no longer keep him out of her sight. Sean Baker looks at what people don't want to see, what they turn away from. The very structure of division and discrimination is emerging there.
