“Farewell My Concubine” Synopsis

Two boys who supported each other like brothers and endured rigorous training at a Peking Opera actor training school. As they grow up, they become the stars of the popular play ``Haou Betsuhime'' as Cheng Tieyi and Duan Xiaorou.Chouyi, who plays the female role, has a secret crush on Xiaorou, who plays the role of the Overlord. However, Xiaorou ends up marrying the prostitute Chuxian. Eventually, they are caught up in a turbulent era and are at the mercy of a cruel fate...

The story begins after everything ends. Former Peking Opera star actors Cheng Tieyi and Duan Xiaorou will be reunited for the first time in 10 years. This is the first time in 21 years, or even 22 years, that the two have performed together on stage. The two had been estranged for a long time because of the quartet.

The "Gang of Four" refers to the four politicians who led the Cultural Revolution led by Mao Zedong in China (People's Republic of China) from 1966 to 1977. Politicians and intellectuals who were considered to have power at the time were called ``counterrevolutionary elements'' and ``actual power factions,'' and they were violently suppressed, and it is said that at least several million people died.

The movie ``Farewell My Concubine'' (1993) begins in 1924, when memories of the Sino-Japanese War were not far away, and covers the Sino-Japanese War, the period of Japanese military rule, the Kuomintang government era, and the Cultural Revolution. This is a dynamic historical drama that spans about 50 years, up until the 1970s. It is also a story about the love and lives of two Peking Opera actors, Choyi and Xiaorou.

Modern Chinese history and two Peking Opera actors

``Farewell My Concubine'' is the breakthrough work of director Chen Kaige, who would go on to direct `` The Assassination of the First Emperor '' (1998) and `` Beijing Violin '' (2002). Kaiko, who was recognized for his talent with feature-length debuts such as `` Yellow Earth '' (1984) and `` The Children's King '' (1987), took on this work with a gorgeous cast and ample production funds, and was screened at the 46th Cannes Festival. It won the Palme d'Or, the highest award at the international film festival. It also won Best Foreign Language Film at the 51st Golden Globe Awards.

The original story is a novel of the same name published in 1985 by Lee Pik-wa. The reason why this film, which is a film adaptation of a Chinese historical drama, has reached a wide audience around the world is probably due to its success in focusing on the relationship between Choyi and Xiaorou rather than the history itself. The story, which was written by the original author himself, is a melodrama that emphasizes the tragic love and misfortune of people against the great flow of history.

Azusa (later known as Choyi) was raised by her prostitute mother, but her mother abandons her and sends her to a Peking Opera actor training school. There, he met Koishi Tou (later known as Korou), the bold and powerful older brother. The two endure torture-like daily training and finally become star actors.

They became popular for their role in the Peking Opera ``Haoubetsuhime.'' This is the story of the king of the Western Chu Dynasty (Xiang Yu) who is in a desperate situation in a battle with Liu Bang of the Han Dynasty. The king, who was in a predicament with his mistress, Yuhime, and his favorite horse, thought that his army had already been routed, and told Yuhime to flee. However, Yuhime does not leave, dances for the Overlord, and ends her own life with the Overlord's sword.

"I am a woman and not a man." During rehearsals, Azuki repeatedly mistakes Yuhime's line by saying, ``I'll make you a man...'' and receives a harsh reprimand from her master. When Azuki made a mistake in saying something in front of an influential person, Sekito stuck a stick in Azuki's mouth and strongly urged her not to make the mistake again. From that moment on, Azuki Choi forgot the boundary between reality and drama.

For the sake of performing arts, Choi entrusts her body to a powerful person who highly values her beauty, and at the same time, she falls in love with Koro, the stone head who plays the role of the overlord. However, unlike Choi, Korou is a man who clearly separates his real life from the stage. Eventually, Xiaorou decides to marry Chushen, who is also a prostitute like her mother, who once abandoned Choi. From this moment on, the relationship between the two began to take a big turn.
