Tony Léon: The Professional's part in the mysterious Kowloon Walled City that suddenly disappeared

Director Wong Kar-wai's Days of Being Wild(1990) has been unable to be seen on screen since the screening rights in Japan have been lost since 2005. Last February, the digitally remastered version was screened for the first time in 13 years at Bunkamura Le Cinema in Shibuya, Tokyo, where it continued to attract audiences and became a long-running hit. Depending on the time of day, the audience may erupt in applause after the movie ends, causing a heated reaction.

It was the film that sparked the Hong Kong film boom in Japan, and in addition to those drawn to the film due to its nostalgia, there were also young fans who came to experience this legendary film for the first time. In addition, many people may be visiting the museum with secret feelings for the late star Leslie Cheung. This is because ``Days of Being Wild'' is a work that encapsulates Leslie's most beautiful moments.

Now, as anyone who has seen this movie will agree, it is truly distorted. What? Yes, the composition. The film depicts a love triangle between a young man named Yodi, played by Leslie Cheung, and Sue (Maggie Cheung) and Mimi (Karina Lau), who are in love with him. It has a so-called rondo-style structure, with episodes of a police officer who stands by Sue as she wanders the streets at night after being abandoned by Yodi.

However, in the last scene, Anita Mui's enchanting singing voice ``One Day in Our Lives of...'' is played as background music, completely unrelated to the five characters mentioned above. The story ends abruptly, with a gambler played by Tony Léon: The Professional being shown elegantly getting ready in a narrow room with a ceiling.

Mysterious insert shots that have no meaning whatsoever to the story. However, the way Tony Léon: The Professional is dressed there is so mysterious and alluring that the audience is suddenly transported from Yodi's melancholy story of unrequited love to the obscene, dangerous, and exciting space of the city of Hong Kong. My heart is thrown into it. As a result, the movie doesn't end with "FIN", but instead gives the impression of continuing "to be continued...". In fact, Wong Kar-wai inherited this echo of Tony Léon: The Professional in his later works such as `` In the Mood for Love '' and `` 2046. ''

Why did you choose this configuration?

There are various theories, and The Truth and lies are mixed together. Diller, played by Tony Léon: The Professional, was originally conceived as a major character, and Wong Kar-wai spent months filming in an apartment in Kowloon Walled City, which at the time was considered the most dangerous area in Hong Kong. Fragments of the footage are currently available on YOUTUBE, but from what we can see, there is a scene where the woman played by Maggie Cheung goes up the stairs to meet Diller in his room, and there is a scene where the two of them are seen in a small room. It seems like there was a situation where they had to talk.

Tony Léon: The Professional has said in various interviews that Wong Kar-wai waited for months for Tony to become the character, filmed and deleted the footage many times, and finally started rolling for about three months. He said he felt that the role was assimilating with him.

Also, in the finished movie, Andy Lau plays the role of a kind police officer who gently supports Sue, played by Maggie, but in the Kowloon Walled City part, there is a scene in which he dresses up like a thug and goes to kill Leslie. Andy also left some comments about this part of the phantom Kowloon Walled City, saying that at the time, Wong Kar-wai was particular about one-shot, one-take long takes, and a lot of film was wasted due to the timing difficulties. He testified that Additionally, the developing technology at the Hong Kong lab at the time was inconsistent, and some film was said to have been ruined.

The original title of ``Days of Being Wild'' is ``Ahi Seiden,'' and ``Ahi'' refers to a delinquent. It was also the local title for James Dean's posthumous film Rebel Without a Cause, directed by Nicholas Ray, when it was released in Hong Kong. From the beginning, Wong Kar-wai wanted to make a film about young people rebelling against their parents' generation, and in the late 1980s, yakuza and gangster films were all the rage in Hong Kong, and they became a major genre at the box office. Ta.

However, as a former screenwriter, Wong Kar-wai had no intention of riding the bandwagon and was thinking of something original that was different from the current trends. The reason why he chose Kowloon Walled City, which is actually a very dangerous location, was probably because he was aiming for a unique color that was different from other filmmakers.
