Patricia Highsmith's classic film adaptation
In 1955, American female author Patricia Highsmith published the novel " The Talented The Talented Mr. Ripley Ripley. " The protagonist, Tom The Talented Mr. Ripley, who lives a low-class life in New York, travels to Italy, where he becomes fascinated with Dickie, the son of a wealthy man who lives freely there, and eventually murders him and impersonates him. This is the unexpected story that unfolds.
The protagonist is a psychopathic criminal who goes against established morals, but for some reason, readers find themselves rooting for him. The 1950s was a turning point for American culture. In 1956, Elvis Presley appeared in " Heartbreak Hotel ," popularizing the new music of rock and roll, and James Dean, in " Rebel Without a Cause " (1955) and " East of Eden " (1955), was in the spotlight as a Hollywood rebel. It was also an era in which iconic figures who changed the conservative values of the time were born.
Considering the historical context, the criminal Tom The Talented Mr. Ripley could also be considered a rebel of a new era.

The novel has been adapted for the screen several times, including René Clement's Purple Noon in 1960, Anthony Minghella's The Talented Mr. Ripley in 1999, and Steven Zaillian's 2024 The Talented Mr. Ripley eight-episode adaptation of The Talented Mr.
Zaillian, who directed the streaming version, said in an interview with the Daily Beast (April 6, 2024): "It's a great set of characters and a story that I think can be told over and over again. The premise of impersonating someone else is something that can happen at any time. And we're drawn to those kinds of stories."
In recent years, there has been a reevaluation of Highsmith as a writer. An interesting documentary about her life, " Patricia Highsmith " (23), was made, and A Very Private Affair as a lesbian was also revealed. In addition, her novel "Carol", published under a different name, was made into a film by director Todd Haynes, and she was once again in the spotlight as a pioneering LGBTQ writer.
Among them, her early masterpiece "The Talented Mr. The Talented Mr. Ripley" is a subject suitable for a film that allows the creator to express their individuality. Clement's " Purple Noon " produced a rare French superstar, Alain Delon, but what perspective did Anthony Minghella's version (starring Matt Damon), which was made next, take? This director also won the Academy Award for Best Picture and Best Director for his previous work, " The English Patient " (1996), and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for "The Talented Mr. The Talented Mr. Ripley". I would like to consider the interpretation of "The Talented The Talented Mr. Ripley" in the 1990s from several points.
