Great cinematography by John Seale and a great cast
The film's cinematographer is John Seale, an acclaimed Australian cinematographer who won an Oscar for " The English Patient ." The film was shot in a seaside town near Naples, and beautiful landscapes appear one after another. Minghella himself said he had the films of Fellini and Visconti in mind when shooting the film (he was particularly conscious of "La Dolce Vita").
Mirrors are used many times as props to reflect the psychology of the characters. The image reflected in the mirror shows The Talented Mr. Ripley's twisted psychology as he tries to become another person. At times, his split image is projected onto the black lid of the piano. Such detailed image composition enhances the thrill of the film.
In particular, the image of the mirror in the cabin at the end leaves a somewhat heavy aftertaste. Hurt by love, the protagonist commits one crime after another and eventually loses sight of himself. His torn psychology is reflected in the multifaceted mirror. And when you realize that this is actually the title sequence at the beginning, you can't help but want to watch it again from the beginning. Now known overseas as a "cult classic," the film has many fans who watch it over and over again, and this is no doubt due in large part to the appeal of these images.
And while the cast may seem all-star, the director appears to have cast many of the actors before they made their big break. In the case of Matt Damon, he saw early rushes of the film and chose him for the lead role before he became a popular star with Good Will Hunting (1997).
The character of The Talented Mr. Ripley, who is searching for his own identity, is also similar to Jason Bourne in Matt's later masterpiece "The Bourne" series. Tom The Talented Mr. Ripley plays a serial killer, but in the aforementioned interview with "Flesh Air," the director said, "I wanted to show The Talented Mr. Ripley's human, relatable side, not his Monster side."
In the original work, the main character is described as having "a rather dull, forgettable face," so the director probably thought that by casting Matt, who has a simple-looking face, he could express The Talented Mr. Ripley-like aspirations that exist within everyone.
Although The Talented Mr. Ripley appears to be a good person at first glance, he lies as easily as he breathes and commits crimes. His line, "I'd rather be someone, even if it's a fake, than be my true self, which has no merits," conveys the sad feelings of an ordinary person. This is the delicate image of The Talented Mr. Ripley that Matt Damon, who still had the appearance of an anxious boy, could have portrayed at this time.
Jude Law played the role of Dickie, the man the protagonist admires, and had a fateful encounter with the director. The director wanted to cast a British actor with a slightly more mature air for the role, and after seeing Jude play a vampire-like role in the mysterious love story " Crocodile Tears " (1998), he selected him for the role. Dickie is charismatic and admired by everyone, but he is also somewhat arrogant and wayward. Jude was a perfect fit for the role, and he looked cool in the elegant fashion designed by Ann Roth and others.

He later starred in Minghella's Cold Mountain and A Bit of a Breakdown (2006). When he visited Japan, he spoke highly of the director, saying, "I would do any role for him." After the director passed away, a memorial event was held to honor his achievements. It was Minghella who maximized the young Jude's acting potential, and he was nominated for an Oscar for his work in The Talented Mr. Ripley Mr. Talent and Cold Mountain .
Other cast members who would later go on to win Oscars include Gwyneth Paltrow as Dickie's girlfriend, Cate Blanchett as the young lady who falls in love with The Talented Mr. Ripley, and Philip Seymour Hoffman as Dickie's friend (the director was a visionary).
And in the second half, Jack Davenport plays the role of Peter, who has feelings for The Talented Mr. Ripley. He played a detective in the aforementioned " Tears of the Crocodile ," in which Jude starred. After that, he appeared in the " Pirates of the Caribbean " series (2003-2007) and " Kingsman " (2014), but he didn't make a particularly outstanding impression. Minghella's skill at directing actors can be seen in the way he makes good use of this often overlooked British actor.
