Kubrick's multiple editions and S. King's version of the TV drama

Stanley Kubrick's The Shining is hailed as a horror masterpiece by movie fans around the world, but did you know that there are three versions of it, depending on the country and time of release?

The original version, which premiered in New York and Los Angeles on May 23, 1980, is 146 minutes long. However, five days later, Kubrick deleted the approximately two-minute epilogue in which the manager, Armand, visits the mother of the Torrance family, Wendy, and her son, Danny, at the hospital (Reference 1). When it was released in the United States, the length of the film was 144 minutes (sometimes it was listed as 143 minutes) (in Japan, it is currently available on DVD `` The Shining Special Edition ''). Subsequently, a 119-minute international version (Continental version) with even more deleted scenes was released in Japan and other countries.

Stephen King, the original author, was honored to have his novel adapted into a film by a famous director, but after its release he repeatedly criticized Kubrick for making significant changes to the story.

King got the idea for the novel from his experience staying at the Stanley Hotel in Colorado, which was about to close for the winter, and also from his own experience of struggling with alcoholism. It is not hard to imagine that he projected himself into the main character, writer Jack, who struggles until the end between interference from evil spirits and love for his family, but in the movie Jack (Jack Nicholson) shows little love for his family, There is no conflict in the madness in which he chases after his wife and child towards the end. From the perspective of “Overlook Hotel vs. Jack,” the novel and the movie have completely opposite endings.

Unsatisfied with the novel , King released a television drama (3 episodes, 4 hours 33 minutes in total) in 1997, taking on the role of executive producer and scriptwriter himself in order to release a video work that was faithful to the novel. The Shining Special Edition ).

Unfortunately, it is currently not possible to watch the original version before the epilogue was removed, but a comparison between the American version of The Shining, the international version, and King's drama version reveals Kubrick's intentions in making the changes.
