Re-screening in the ``Super Cinerama'' format, which is long awaited

The release of ``2001: A Space Odyssey'' as a new 70mm print has become a reality, but to be specific, there is one more thing left to be done: re-screening in the official projection format ``Super Cinerama.'' I mentioned earlier the split-type "Cinerama," which projects three 35mm prints onto a screen at the same time, but Super Cinerama is a single-type model that projects one 70mm print onto the same curved screen as Cinerama, which fits the human viewing angle. This viewing environment gives the audience a deep sense of immersion. (Note: In the past, the split type was also called Super Cinerama because of the change in the number of frames, but to avoid confusion, in this article only the single type will be referred to as Super Cinerama.)

When films shot with Super Panavision 70, such as ``2001: A Space Odyssey,'' are screened at Super Cinerama, the top and bottom of the screen are cropped to match the ratio of the same standard, and even when projected on a curved screen, the left and right sides are The print must be compressed on both sides to prevent the screen from stretching. For this reason, a special print must be created using an optical printer equipped with a special lens, but it doesn't seem that elaborate this time. Even if prints were prepared based on such a process, unfortunately there are no theaters in Japan capable of showing Super Cinerama.

However, there are definitely ways to watch Super Cinerama in Japan, such as by installing a special curved screen. Nowadays, more realistic movie screenings such as 4DX, MX4D, support screenings, and cinema concerts are booming, and the Super Cinerama version of ``2001'' is a project that is expected to be well received. If this is realized, the audience will definitely get a different impression from the 70mm and IMAX films shown this time.

The recent mention of different formats may make you wonder, ``Which is the legitimate screening style for 2001: A Space Odyssey?'' But let's just swallow it and save Super Cinerama for some fun. Watching ``2001: A Space Odyssey'' in theaters, which took over two years in production alone and is on a scale that cannot be measured by today's commercial film standards. That in itself is an extremely luxurious experience.
