PTA refuses to sell it as a ``Tom Cruise movie''

"Magnolia" is the third feature film by director Paul Thomas Anderson (PTA), who was born in 1970. By his early 40s, PTA had won director's awards at all three major film festivals in the world, and was hailed as a ``young master'', but he did not yet have that much fame at the time he made ``Magnolia''. Distributor New Line Cinema initially wanted to promote it as a "Tom Cruise movie." PTA, on the other hand, rejected the idea, saying, ``This is a group drama,'' and designed a poster with the nine main characters evenly distributed over the petals of Magnolia, and also edited the trailer themselves.

"Magnolia" preview

This episode shows PTA's strong artistry, which does not compromise on promotion policies. However, he is not the type of person who is completely particular about his own ideas and style, and is flexible enough to incorporate a variety of ideas. For example, PTA said of the genesis of this work, ``We came up with the concept of adapting Aimee Mann's songs into a screenplay, similar to how a book is adapted into a movie.'' What on earth could that mean?
