"If Beale Street Could Talk" synopsis
"We're Having a Baby" New York in the 1970s. Tish is 19 years old. My girlfriend Fanny is 22 years old. This should have been a wonderful report for the two, who grew up together since childhood, naturally developed a love for each other, and found their soulmate in each other. However, Fanny is in jail for a crime she did not commit. He heard Tish's words through the glass of the visiting room. A small quarrel angers a white police officer, and he is arrested for rape. If found guilty, he has no choice but to spend his days in prison filled with shame. In order to protect their love, Fanny's family and friends scramble to rescue Fanny, but various difficulties await them... Will the lovers be able to overcome this soul-testing ordeal and return to each other's arms?

Director Barry Jenkins' style made use of
`` Moonlight '' (2016), which competed with ` `La La Land '' (2016) and was selected for Best Picture at the 89th Academy Awards, uses distinctive cinematography and editing to depict the story of a person who lives a lonely life. It was a masterpiece that beautifully and fantastically captured emotions. The next remarkable work by precocious director Barry Jenkins, who completed a film that reflects this pure soul while still in his 30s, was directed by James, one of the most prominent 20th century American writers and a prominent writer of African descent.・`` The If Beale Street Could Talk'' is based on the novel by Baldwin.
Director Jenkins has been planning to adapt this novel for a long time and has taken the time to write the screenplay himself. Although there are some major additions made by the director at the end, it is generally faithful to the original story. And, just like in ``Moonlight,'' each scene is carefully and lovingly shot, with beautifully edited tones, and you can clearly feel the director's strong love for this story.

This is because, although this original work deals with the heavy elements of discrimination, as it depicts a false accusation case with racial discrimination as a background, the overall impression is rather romantic and delicate. The tragic story of two fateful lovers, "Tish" played by KiKi Layne and "Fanny" played by Stephen James, being separated by a prison wall against their will, is based on Shakespeare's "Romeo". There are parts that remind me of ``And Juliet''.
This worldview, where awareness of social issues and delicate beauty coexist, is also shared by ``Moonlight.'' Rather, it may be said that director Jenkins' style was created by the strong influence of Baldwin's literature. However, the problem itself is far too serious.
