The inner world of “Atonement” depicted in 5 minutes and 6 seconds by the legendary one-shot shooting
2019.03.18
A reckless attempt to capture the highlight scene in one cut
How do you portray the inner world of the characters? In order to overcome this proposition, this work makes full use of precise techniques in terms of ``narration'' and ``composition.'' But this would be a spoiler, so I won't go into it here. What I would like to mention instead is an attempt to lyrically depict the situations of the characters through their eyes and hearts.
The seaside scene in Dunkirk is particularly where this appears as an overwhelming scene that will leave you speechless. The year is 1940. Thousands to tens of thousands of soldiers are helplessly surviving this twilight chaos, waiting for a ship of help that may arrive at any moment.
In recent years, director Christopher Nolan also depicted this harsh situation in `` Dunkirk '' (17), but the methodology chosen for this film ``Atonement'' was completely different and groundbreaking. This is because the seaside scene is depicted in one breath, in a 5-minute, 6-second long take.

``When I heard about the idea, I turned blue, but I thought it would be a great scene if it worked,'' said cinematographer Seamus McGarvey.
Also, Peter Robertson, who operated the Steadicam at this time (he was also responsible for `` Bohemian Rhapsody '' and `` Mary Poppins Returns ''), although his name does not appear at the top of the credits, It even made James McAvoy say, ``[His achievements] deserve an Academy Award!''
