What is the “true enemy” in the “nuclear age”?

The film begins with an American TV broadcast reporting on a far-right insurrection in Russia. Radchenko, who is leading the rebellion, and the coup d'état forces occupy the nuclear weapons base, and the American government and military immediately take an emergency stance to deal with this potentially dangerous situation. The nuclear submarine Alabama is then sent to port to deal with the situation.

The captain of the Alabama, Colonel Ramsey, is an easy-to-understand up-and-coming military man with extremely conservative ideas and a hawkish attitude toward the military. His trademark is a red cap. In fact, director Tony Scott himself always wore a tattered, worn-out cap and played the role of a straightforward and stubborn type of person towards those around him. This has some similarities to the cap Donald Trump wore during his election.

The deputy commander is the main character, Major Hunter, played by Denzel Washington. He is an elite Harvard graduate and a moderate on military diplomacy. Ramsey and Hunter eventually find themselves in a bitter conflict over whether to launch a nuclear missile at Russia over an "incomplete" order to launch a nuclear weapon that arrives in Alabama.

It makes sense that Major Hunter is extremely cautious about launching nuclear weapons, even though he is a military man. He predicts that in the tense military situation of the world, which has entered the nuclear age after the Cold War, if one side's military uses nuclear weapons, a chain reaction of retaliation will occur. Hunter says, ``The true enemy of the nuclear world is war itself.'' Yes, once launched, there is no way to avoid a nightmare situation in which both countries will suffer devastating damage and countless deaths.

After being attacked by a Russian nuclear submarine, the Alabama loses communication with the base and is completely cut off from the outside world. Because nuclear weapons are permitted to be used in emergency situations, the decision to launch a missile is made inside a nuclear submarine, creating an unusual situation.
