Becomes an independent mini theater

The time for change came in 1992, when we left the major movie companies and started in earnest as an independent movie theater consisting of two theaters (the upper floor, which used to be Shibuya Piccadilly, closed in 1990, and opened in 1996). It will restart as a mini-theater in 2018.Capacity is 303 seats).

That year, they screened director Todd Haynes' unique film Poison (1991, distributed by Eurospace). This is the memorable feature debut of director Haynes, who later directed the blockbuster `` Velvet Goldmine '' (1998) at the same theater.

The original story of ``Poison'' was written by Jean Genet. It is a three-episode video work that incorporates experimental tastes (similar to `` Caravaggio ''), and became a hot topic among connoisseurs as a provocative work with gay tastes. Since the 1990s, the producer has worked on films such as Haynes' works, ` `Boys Don't Cry '' (1999, directed by Kimberly Pierce), `` Hedwig and the Angry Inch '' (2001, directed by John Cameron Mitchell), etc. Christine Vachon is the creator of many provocative independent films.

Vachon published a book in 1998 about the secret behind his creative filmmaking, ` `Indie Films Change the World '' (co-authored by David Edelstein, Japanese version published in 2004, published by Artist House), written by Cinemarise Managing Director Kanae Hyai. was in charge of the translation and sent it out into the world, and there is this passage in it.

"There were two groups of people in New York's independent scene: either they made experimental films that were as good as watching paint dry for two hours, or they went on the road to fame. There was no middle ground between the two, but we wanted to make a film that was both innovative and entertaining. For example, `` Blue Velvet, '' which suggested a completely new direction.''
