Provocative content that never fades
In November 2019, Shibuya PARCO reopened after renovations. This is the first time in three years that the company has reopened in the same location, but the company seems to be positioning it as a great opportunity to start the second chapter of its 50th year. The tenants are not selected based on whether they are famous or unknown, but rather on whether they are unique and interesting, and people are paying attention to whether Shibuya, which once led the way in cutting-edge culture, can be revived.
At its feet, there is a small, unusual building. Nowadays, it houses a live music venue and apparel, but back in the 1980s, there was a cutting-edge movie theater that became a small catalyst and changed the flow of people in Shibuya along with PARCO. Cinemarise. It was a mini-theater that opened in 1986, and closed three years before PARCO, ending its 30-year run, but it was the only screening theater in Tokyo and in some cases in Japan, depending on the movie. It was a single screening theater.
It seemed like a movie theater that would play movies that had never been seen before, and there was a lot of attention to detail in the architectural design. The exterior is covered with drape curtains made of a material called die-cast aluminum (the exterior still exists), the interior walls and floors are made of exposed concrete and iron, and the screen has stage curtains that open on the left and right. It was an unusual movie theater with a unique design that combined a mechanical industrial feel and a Western vintage feel, surrounded by large silver-colored objects that imitated what it would have been like to live in. The seats were made in France.

After the museum opens, carefully selected works that match the uniqueness of the museum will be exhibited. Among them, the films that were big hits and contributed greatly to the creation of the Cinemarise brand were David Lynch's ` `Blue Velvet ,'' which was shown in 1987, and Percy Adlon's ` `Bagdad Cafe, '' which was shown in 1989. This is probably the movie ``The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover'' that was screened in 1990. In particular, this film's unique style and theme fit very well with the concept of the theater, and I think it created a special cinematic experience.
The structure is similar to a Western stage play, the curtain opens at the opening and the curtain closes at the ending, and the provocative attitude of depicting vivid depictions of appetite, sexual desire, desire for control, etc. in a cynical yet funny way, This is a provocative piece of work that does not get old in Hollywood movies, such as skillfully mixing the horizontal size and depth of CinemaScope, and creating a spatial design that is a hybrid of theater, painting, photography, and film. .
