3. “Destruction Babies” (16) Director: Tetsuya Mariko 108 minutes

One of Suda's characteristics is the "violence of his acting," and this film is the epitome of that, and it is the one that has strongly imprinted Suda's image as an actor. The film depicts the journey of a violent man played by Yuya Yagira, a high school student (Masaki Suda) who is fascinated by him, and a hostess (Nana Komatsu) who is kidnapped by the two.

The film is an explosion of the love of violence from the genius director Tetsuya Mariko, who later directed the drama and film "From Miyamoto to You" (2018, 2019), and the intense depictions continue throughout the film. Among them, the transformation of the high school student played by Suda leaves a deep impression on the viewer.

Originally a local delinquent, his life changes when he meets the embodiment of violent impulses played by Yagira. The scene where he attacks a stranger in a shopping district and drags her around, following his instincts, is truly shocking, and it is a feat that only Suda could pull off, even among people of the same generation. Before and after this, he films the protagonist committing violence and laughs, saying, "Sorry, it's just The Game," and chuckles when his existence is exposed online, exuding a sense of danger everywhere.

His deliberate descent into depravity after acquiring the "weapon" of violence is several levels deeper than his character in "Yamikin Ushijima-kun Part 2" (2014), in which he was still unsure. As in "East of Eden" (55) and "The Wharf" (54), vivid portrayals of the violent impulses of youth have long been an important element of coming-of-age films, but in this film, Suda's bizarre performance of "breaking down" functions as an important engine. His bloodshot gaze and painful screams will still be a shock to watch even today.

"Destruction Babies" also stars the next generation of up-and-coming actors, including Murakami Nijiro and Kitamura Takumi.
