9. Just Being Alive is Love (2018) Director: Kosai Sekine 109 minutes

The film is based on the novel of the same name by playwright and novelist Motoya Yukiko, who has written many sensational works, including "Show Me Your Love, You Cowards" (2007) and "Violence and Waiting" (2010), which were also made into films.

A "painful" love story depicting the tense daily life of a woman (Shuri) who suffers from manic depression and is fed up with the difficulties of life, and her boyfriend (Suda) who has entered a rut. In "Double Life", Suda played a couple on the verge of falling apart with Kadowaki Mugi, but in this film he plays a naive reporter for a scoop magazine who is exhausted between his work and his lover and has given up on thinking, with a much more restrained performance.

Suda's dark, sunken eyes, vacant gaze and lifeless expression as he stands blankly are something we haven't seen much of in his previous works. His pathetic acting, which seems to take on the pressure we feel every day, as he endures and reaches his limit with stress, smashing his laptop against the window or punching the toilet wall, is sure to leave a scar on your heart even after you've finished watching it. This is a work that will leave you in awe of Suda's expressiveness, which does not rely on lines.

Shuri's performance as a girl who cannot control her emotions and breaks down from the inside like an auto-eating process is also outstanding. In addition, the scenes that appear many times in the film, such as "eating a convenience store bento in a dark room" and "hurting someone important with words," are painful and piercing. However, this may be because there are parts that match the bitter memories of love and youth that we have experienced.
