Things to know as an editor learned from the legendary original author

Q: It seems that Mr. Hirata's first editor was Mr. Karinade. What kind of person was Mr. Karinade when you first met him?

Hirata: He said, "You're 25 now. I'm 50, so when you're 70, I'll be 95, so we're roughly the same age. So don't worry about it and think we're the same age." I thought, ``Is that what it's all about?'' and that's what I really did (lol). I had fun. I go every week to pick up manuscripts, and I can't help but look forward to those days. Drink all the time. On the way, we went to karaoke and went to a ramen shop. So I went back to work and drank endlessly.

Q: What kind of writers influenced Mr. Karinade?

Hirata: Sanpei Shirato and Yoshiharu Tsuge. These are the Gallo writers. Also , Bob Marley (lol). *Mari Karina's pen name was inspired by the words ``Caribbean'' and ``Bob Marley,'' as she was fond of reggae.

Q: What type of person was Mr. Karinade as a manga author?

Hirata: He was a person who valued the basics. That's why many editors make people who want to become manga authors read Karinade's original work as a model. Other original authors may be of their own making, or may not have a name* in mind. On the other hand, Mr. Karinade's original work was intended to be made into a manga. (*Name: A draft composed of the development of the manga divided into panels)

Q: I feel that Mr. Karinade's original work is very easy to read, as there are few side-by-side notes.

Hirata: That's the important part. Manga artists find it boring if they give them all instructions, so they leave room for expression. If you read the original work, you'll understand that this part was left to the manga artist. However, I give very detailed instructions regarding the parts that need to be given. When Mr. Karinade was young, he learned how to create manga at Kazuo Koike's Gekigasonjuku, so I think that had a big influence on him.

Q: How does your work with Mr. Karinade affect Mr. Hirata's activities as an editor?

Hirata: What do manga artists want to draw most? The most important thing to do is to bring out this. Rather than creating a story that will sell, first create something that the person will find most interesting. After that, I think about how to sell the work. I'm very conscious of that.

Editors usually fall into the mold of the first writer they work with, and that person becomes like a mentor. What you learn there is not only technique, but also what it means to be a writer. For me, that kind of person was Mr. Karinade. That's why when I work with a manga artist, I don't just discuss the story, I also talk about various things, find out what the core of this person is, and create a manga from there.
