Director Lee Sang-il has worked on many masterpieces such as `` Hula Girl '' (2006), `` Villains '' (10), and `` Rage '' (16). In fact, his first new work in six years, ``Wandering Moon,'' has just been released. Director Lee's skill in approaching human nature is as impressive as ever, but in this film, the heavy reality seen in his previous films has been suppressed, giving us a sense of a new side. The addition of Hong Kyung-pyo, who worked on `` Burning the Movie '' (18) and ` `Parasite '' (19), as director of photography will also play a role in this new world.

How has director Lee faced his first new work in six years? In response to the questions we posed, Director Lee spoke in a very calm tone, sometimes thoughtfully, and spoke carefully.

Make use of allegory

Q: Six years have passed since your last work, “ Rage .” What were your thoughts on the next work during the four to five years until it was decided that this work, "Wandering Moon", would be made into a movie?

Lee: If there was something like a goal for me when I decided to pursue a career in film, I feel like one of the goals I reached was `` anger .'' I felt like I had come full circle, and I felt like I was wandering, wondering where I should go next. Of course, it would raise the bar for viewers, and I felt like I had reached a dead end myself.

Even in the midst of all this, there were several projects that were in progress, but due to coronavirus concerns, they were not able to be filmed. It was under these circumstances that I came across this original work, `` Wandering Moon .'' Stagnation is a common occurrence in life, but perhaps there is a stagnation in some way, but it didn't take long after reading this work for me to want to make it into a movie.

Q: What was the point of reading the original story that made you want to make it into a movie?

Lee: The tone and colors of the novel are different from any of the films I've worked on, but I felt that the themes depicted were common. A person's good intentions based on assumptions cause injury and suffering to the person concerned. No one doubts their common sense. It was a novel that looked sharply at modern times. The relationship between the two main characters is something that is hard to see in real life, but it is no exaggeration to say that it is a connection between souls. Honestly, it made me want to portray it in a movie.

Q: I had the impression that the overwhelming realism of director Lee's previous works was suppressed and the allegorical nature of this film came to the fore. Have there been any changes in your own consciousness?

Lee: That's right. If I covered this original story with only my own menstruation, it might become even harsher and more painful, so I was careful about that.

Regarding the relationship between chintz and text, I felt both a calm view of ``Is this possible?'' and ``If this kind of purity can exist, wouldn't the world be a very beautiful place?'' This time, I decided to bet on the latter without hesitation. Let's fully approve of these two. Precisely because of the harsh reality, I felt that by making use of the allegorical nature of comparison, I could approach The Truth of the chintz and text.
