"Postman of Nagasaki" directed by Mika Kawase Documentary looking at the future through communication with the dead [Director's Interview Vol.226]
I just want a bicycle and a boy standing
Q: There is a scene in which a boy on a bicycle enters the current landscape of Nagasaki, which reminds me of Mr. Taniguchi. That expression was very impressive.
Kawase: I didn't know if it would work or not, but I gave it a try. Mr. Peter and Mr. Taniguchi, the main characters of this story, have already passed away. So when I thought about what could connect Nagasaki now with Nagasaki then, that's what came to mind. But I'm not assuming that the boy on the bicycle is Mr. Taniguchi. I wanted a child who would just stand with a bicycle. Moreover, I thought it had to be a child from Nagasaki. It's not a re-enactment of the scene, so there's no particular acting involved. I shot this without losing the focus on the fact that there is an old-fashioned boy in modern-day Nagasaki. I'm still not sure if it was effective (lol).

Q: I think it was very effective. I think it was good that the director didn't make the boy act strangely.
Kawase: I just looked for a girl who could stand up beautifully. It's actually difficult to stand normally. There was a child who could stand like that, so I asked for it. .
Q: The original title is "THE POSTMAN OF NAGASAKI," but the English title of the movie is "THE POSTMAN FROM NAGASAKI."
Kawase: Personally, I thought that ``FROM'' would be perfect in the sense that I want people living today to know from ``Nagasaki'' what actually happened in Nagasaki. We also consulted with Peter's family regarding changing the title from "OF" to "FROM." We all thought and decided, ``If we can convey the feelings of Peter and Taniguchi even more to the people who have seen the movie, then FROM is also an option.''
