Historical works that shocked the 70s

More than 40 years have passed since Martin Scorsese's ``Taxi Driver'' (1976) was released in Japan. It is now considered one of the timeless classics and has influenced numerous films. Especially those who experienced it on screen in the 1970s will never forget its strong impression.

The opening scene has an extraordinary atmosphere as a taxi appears from behind the Smoke of a New York alley. From there, I was immediately drawn to him and gradually became assimilated to the actions of Travis, who plays the driver. The movie ends with a big impact, but there is something mysterious about it, and it is impossible to clearly explain what is happening. Reality and fantasy intertwine, and the line between them becomes unclear. That's why I want to watch it again and again. It was a movie with such mysterious magical power. There must have been many people who were somehow obsessed with this movie and couldn't get out of its world (one person even bought the army jacket the main character wore).

"Taxi Driver" preview

Time has passed, but in recent years, when I looked up reviews of this movie on the Internet, I found some surprising things written about it. ``Taxi Driver is the story of a menhera man,'' ``The main character is a psycho driver,'' and ``After shooting someone, the main character goes back to his job, and the beast is once again unleashed on the city.'' It's true that the main character was insane, but how many people went to see a movie thinking it was a story about a crazy man?

Also, how many people thought Travis was a beastly criminal? When I talked about this to friends who went to the movie theater when the movie was released, they were surprised and said, ``Oh, it wasn't that kind of movie.'' It was certainly dangerous, but there were also parts of it that I could sympathize with. That's probably why many people have been suffering from what could be called "Travis syndrome" for many years. Also, some people have recently pointed out similarities with the blockbuster hit `` Joker '' (2019). The director himself has said that he was influenced by this work, but personally, I feel that it is fundamentally a completely different work, and I felt that the times have changed in the way we view movies.

When we looked into the reaction overseas, we found that director Martin Scorsese has directed many films since ``Taxi Driver,'' so there were comparisons to those films. I also learned that what was once not talked about is now becoming an established theory. The theory is that Travis died during the final raid. I wanted to revisit this work, taking into consideration the changes that have occurred since the 1970s when the film was made and the present.
