``The Deer Hunter,'' which won five awards including Best Picture at the 51st Academy Awards in 1979, will be revived and released in a ``4K digitally restored version'' 40 years after its production. This is great news for me, who fell in love with this movie when it was first released and became obsessed with it. No, I'm not the only one. When I talk to movie fans of my generation, I often hear people say that watching ``The Deer Hunter'' was the first time they became aware of the magnitude and weight of movies. Yes, this movie was amazing and heavy. It was all too dramatic.
“The Deer Hunter” trailer
Although it is now well-established as a masterpiece of anti-war films based on the Vietnam War, at the time it was not widely praised as a clear-cut anti-war film. What is interesting is that `` Homecoming ,'' which also takes the Vietnam War as its theme and is directly anti-war, was nominated for the Academy Award that year. Jane Fonda, who won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in the movie, watched ``The Deer Hunter'' and criticized it in the media, calling it ``a racist movie and directed by a fascist.'' To her, who was also known as a social activist, ``The Deer Hunter'' may have seemed masculine and lacking in theme.
But Michael Cimino speaks. ``I don't make movies to make a point. I make movies to talk about people's lives.'' -- Cimino and Fonda reportedly didn't speak when they met at the Academy Awards ceremony, but the movie I guess the manufacturing stance was too different.
