What is the unequal society and the true nature of the Monster seen in “ The Host” ?

Problems in Korean society highlighted by the appearance of Monster
So, what exactly is this work expressing? In the first place, Gwemul was created because overseas researchers selfishly dumped a large amount of formaldehyde, a poisonous chemical, into the sewers because they didn't want things to be cleaned up. This is based on an actual incident in 2000 in which U.S. Forces Korea personnel released formaldehyde into the Han River.
This is similar to the setting of the monster movie " Godzilla " (54), which was inspired by radiation exposure incidents such as the "Lucky Dragon No. 5" incident, which was caused by the hydrogen bomb test conducted by the US military on Bikini Atoll. This brings up social themes such as the arrogance of the great power America and the problems of our own country being dominated by that power. In that sense, we are reminded that South Korea and Japan share very similar social structures.

The film also highlights the South Korean government's cruelty toward ordinary citizens. Kang-du fought with a brave American soldier to save the Korean people who were playing in the Han River during the attack on Gwemul. Afterwards, the soldier dies and is hailed as a hero, but Kang-du, who also fought, is isolated. And even when he says, ``I want to help my daughter,'' they think he's crazy and don't want to help him.
That's when a citizens' group sprung up. They hold demonstrations, demanding that the government, which enforces a discriminatory segregation policy, ``release Gangdu.''

The Gwangju Incident, in which citizens who staged demonstrations were murdered by a powerful government, was recognized in Japan through the Korean film ` `Taxi Driver'' (17) starring Song Kang-ho. As has become widely known, South Korea has a history of winning democracy through citizen demonstrations despite experiencing such painful incidents.
