"Romance Doll" synopsis

Because it is a universal subject, it is difficult to create something new about it, but a beautiful, ephemeral, yet challenging masterpiece was born here. ``Romance Doll'' (2020) is a gem of a love story co-starring Issei Takahashi and Yu Aoi. This work was originally a novel written by director Tanada that was published in the magazine ``Da Vinci'' in 2008, and it is a work that took about 12 years to make into a movie. What's more, during the production of Tanada's Moon and Cherry (2004), the concept of a husband and his wife hiding the fact that they are love doll makers was said to have existed. Director Tanada made his feature debut in 2001, so he has spent about two-thirds of his career as a director with this story.

The reason why it took so long to make it into a movie is that there was a lot of backlash against ``a woman writing a work about love dolls.'' Although he tried to interview the various parties involved in order to write the plot and novel, he was often shut out, and Tanada had no choice but to write mostly from his imagination based on materials.

However, the times are changing little by little, and at the love doll exhibition held in 2017, ``Love Dolls of Now and Past'', an exhibition commemorating the 40th anniversary of Orient Industry, about 60% of the visitors were women, and moreover, young women were in attendance for a long time. We are now in a situation that would have been unimaginable five years ago, with people waiting in line. Director Tanada, who had visited the exhibition himself, approached the producer about the project, and work began on making it into a film.
