“Before Sunrise” synopsis

Jesse (Ethan Hawke), a young American, and Celine (Julie Delpy), a student at the Sorbonne University, feel a connection from the moment they meet on the Eurotrain. After getting off the train in Vienna, the two spend The Day After 14 hours talking while walking around the city... Their natural conversations reveal their outlook on life, values, and subtle fluctuations deep within their hearts. But the time to say goodbye was fast approaching... Celine is a Parisienne majoring in literature at Sorbonne University.

On the way home from visiting his grandmother, he meets Jesse, a young American The Journalist, on the Eurotrain from Budapest to Paris. After fleeing a fight between a German couple and taking refuge in a restaurant on the train, the two have endless conversations about themselves, work, and memories from their childhood. Even when they arrived at the Vienna station where Jesse got off, their conversation wasn't over yet. I do not want to break up. I want to talk more. Jesse honestly expresses his feelings. ``It's 14 hours until tomorrow morning. Would you like to walk through the streets of Vienna with me?'' Feeling the same way, Celine grabbed her luggage and got off the train with Jesse. Cobblestone streets, churches, record stores, Ferris wheels in parks, floating restaurants, old bars, mysterious fortune tellers, riverside poets...

The small events that Celine and Jesse encounter on the street spark a feeling in their hearts. As they continued walking, they talked about their recently ended romance, and then went to a cafe and confessed to each other what a wonderful encounter they were having. But the end of the 14 hours is almost here. The two, who couldn't afford to stay in a hotel, hugged each other in the park as dawn dawned. In the morning, it was time to say goodbye. However, the two cannot say goodbye. ``Let's meet here in six months.'' The two finally revealed their true feelings. After 14 hours, the lovers are finally closer together.

Director R. Linklater's early masterpiece

An American independent film in the 1990s, starring Quentin Tarantino, Kevin Smith, and Harmony Korine. If we go back a little bit, there are directors such as Gus Van Sant and Jim Jarmusch, but these directors came into the limelight as darlings of the times in the 1980s when major film companies produced popular entertainment films. I feel like it was also a reaction to the trend towards becoming more commercially radical. Director Richard Linklater was a symbol of this phenomenon, along with those who rose to fame from the indies.

Director Linklater, who had already shot the cult classic "Dazed and Confused" (1993), which captured the mood of young people in the 1990s, directed the film about a young man he happened to meet on a trip. It was ``Before Sunrise'' (1995), a movie about a man and a woman who land in a foreign city and spend a short time together. If we were to categorize it into a genre, it would probably be classified as a ``romance movie,'' but this is an intellectual and experimental film that goes beyond its charm and features many ambitious attempts. By thinking about this work, it will become clear that Richard Linklater is an important filmmaker representing our time.

Through this film, I encountered director Linklater's work, and I realized that movies are not just a way to kill time or a temporary refresher, but that they can express something truly complex, with a depth that makes you spend your whole life thinking about it. I felt that it could become something valuable and important. It was also the work that later led me to start writing about movies. I hope that you, who are reading this text, will also discover Richard Linklater in a new way. I also want people to know the possibilities of movies. I am writing this with that in mind.
