An omnibus film that anticipates global sensibilities

Before this film, Jarmusch made `` Mystery Train .'' The setting is a hotel in Memphis, Elvis Presley's sacred place. This is a three-story omnibus film about three groups of travelers from different nationalities who arrive here.

``Night on Earth'' is also an omnibus film, but this time it expands the setting to the world, looking at small incidents happening simultaneously in five cities around the world (Los Angeles, New York, Paris, Rome, and Helsinki). The main characters are both taxi drivers.

Doesn't the composition, which shows what is happening around the world at the same moment (although due to time differences, the time differs depending on the country), seem to be ahead of current Twitter?

Jarmusch is a director who has a critical perspective on civilization, but I feel that his way of looking at the world was actually a little ahead of his time (I guess that's why he can still survive as a director).

He loved to travel the world and even left the United States to live in Paris when he was younger. This project probably reflects his experience as a traveler.

According to the director himself, the inspiration for this film was William Faulkner's novel `` The Wild Palm '' (published in 1939).

"He wrote two completely different novels and showed them to his editor, who said to him, 'Bill, we want one proper full-length novel, and you brought us one. is two short stories. That's not going to sell.' So he came up with the idea of combining the two short stories into one full-length feature.'' (February 1993, at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. (From an interview at a Jarmusch retrospective screening held)

In addition, Chaucer's 14th century `` The Canterbury Tales '', Boccaccio's `` Decameron '' also written in the 14th century, director Masaki Kobayashi's 4-episode omnibus film `` Ghost Story '' (1965, original story by Yakumo Koizumi), and lighter Italian films. He was also conscious of works that had multiple stories, such as comedy films.
