“The Dark Knight” IMAX version finally released!

On July 10, 2020, the IMAX and 4D versions of Christopher Nolan's `` The Dark Knight '' (2008) were released nationwide in Japan. In the IMAX version, the parts filmed with IMAX cameras will be screened with the top and bottom expanded from the normal cinema size. What's more, the IMAX Laser GT screens at Ikebukuro's Grand Cinema Sunshine and 109 Cinemas Osaka Expo City will expand the viewing angle to 1.43:1, the full-size angle of view shot with IMAX film.

"The Dark Knight" IMAX version. Many fans who knew of its existence but had not been able to see it for a long time will now finally be able to watch the full-size screening, which can be called the complete version.

“The Dark Knight” preview

Originally, IMAX theaters that could screen films existed all over the country as large-scale video screening facilities that screened educational and IMAX-only videos rather than theatrical movies. At the time, you could experience 3D images that were not yet shown in movie theaters, so it might be easier to say that it existed as a type of attraction facility rather than a movie theater.

However, around the time The Dark Knight was released in 2008, its existence began to disappear. Additionally, while there were IMAX theaters around the world that played theatrical movies, there were very few IMAX theaters in Japan that played theatrical movies.

In fact, I watched the previous work of ``The Dark Knight'', `` Batman Begins '' (2005), at the IMAX theater in Shinagawa (02-07). Although ``Batman Begins'' was not an IMAX film, it was just a regular theatrical movie played in an IMAX theater, but I was still overwhelmed by its impact. I also saw Mamoru Oshii's `` Innocence '' (2004) at the same theater, and it was an experience that left me speechless.

When ``The Dark Knight'' was released in 2008, IMAX theaters around the world were screening the IMAX version of the film, but the full-size IMAX version was probably not shown in Japan. IMAX was not mentioned at all in the pamphlet at the time, and the aforementioned IMAX theater in Shinagawa had closed in 2007. It is possible that the IMAX version of The Dark Knight was shown on a limited basis at an IMAX theater event somewhere in Japan, but I have been unable to find any clear records of this. (*1)

12 years have passed since its release. ``The Dark Knight'' can finally be seen in full-size IMAX in Japan. Now we can finally see the image Nolan originally intended.

(*1) Postscript: In 2008, an IMAX film screening of "The Dark Knight" was held at the Suntory Museum IMAX Theater in Tempozan, Osaka.
