The glorious transformation of the cult emperor

` `Pink Flamingos '', released in 1972, was a major turning point for film director John Waters. He had been making tasteless movies with his friends in his hometown of Baltimore, and with this film he suddenly became famous all over the world and rose to become the king of a worldwide cult.

However, his movies are only shown at geeky movie theaters and screenings. It can be said that it is a minor world that has almost nothing to do with good children who are normally well-behaved. Waters himself must have lived his life knowing that he would never be able to work on a major film aimed at families.

However, in 1988, it was once again proven that there are no absolutes in life. That year, Waters' directorial film `` Hairspray '' had a major nationwide release, and it became a huge hit, expanding from 79 theaters in the United States to 227 theaters the following week. Of course, there are no dangerous depictions here, such as the main character eating dog poop (from ``Pink Flamingos''), and anyway, Waters shows the world that he can shine even though he is a major player. He proved it beautifully.

“Hairspray” preview

And here comes the main point. ``Cry-Baby'' was Waters' first film to be associated with a major Hollywood studio. Naturally, the scale of production and release was even larger than that of the previous film, and even the regular staff, who had shared the joys and sorrows of the film with their own bento boxes for many years, were all surprised by the unprecedentedly favorable working conditions.

On the other hand, the cast needed fresh young people who would appeal to young people. And what our John Waters has in his hands is a teen magazine. Apparently, the person on the cover was Johnny Depp, who was gaining popularity at the time for his role in the TV series ``21 Jump Street,'' and it was at this point that a fateful encounter was born.
