"The Straight Story" synopsis

Alvin Strait is a 73-year-old man who lives with his daughter Rose in the small town of Lawrence, Iowa. One night during a thunderstorm, he receives a phone call informing him that his older brother Lyle, with whom he had a long-standing rift, has collapsed. ``I want to look at the starry sky with my brother again.'' Alvin rides a lawnmower, traveling only 5 miles per hour, on a journey to Mount Zion, Wisconsin, where Lyle lives 350 miles away.

A simple and linear journey story about a man who decides to reunite with his brother.

Director David Lynch's ``The Straight Story'' (1999) can be introduced as a surprisingly ``unique work'' considering his filmography. This is because if you watch his feature films, which originated with the impact of `` Eraserhead '' (1977), you will immediately understand how ``foreign'' this work is.

From his early career as a short film writer to the present day, David Lynch, who is often referred to as the ``cult king,'' has continued to release cult-like works into the world, filled with overflowing anxiety, fear, and sinister perversion. There is. These are works that it is hard to say that anyone can understand, but there is something about them that attracts a certain number of people.

Many of the reviews of Lynch's work -- not just his films, but also his paintings and music -- use words like "difficult" and "bizarre," but this book describes the journey of an old man. In the ``The Straight Story'' that I drew, I can hardly hear any words that give off that kind of ``strangeness.'' He has constructed a worldview that is extremely innocent, extremely idyllic, and yet has a straightforward worldview that embodies Lynch's unique spirit.

"The Straight Story" trailer

When it was released in the United States, Buena Vista (Walt Disney) was in charge of distribution, and the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) rated it "G" for all ages, making it different from previous Lynch films. You should be able to tell if it's something different. In this work, there is not even a single ghastly depiction of the strange elephant man, the corpse of a high school girl, or the intersection of dreams and reality.

The story is based on a true story that was published in the New York Times and became a hot topic across the United States. The setting is a quiet rural area in Lawrence, Iowa. Alvin Strait (Richard Farnsworth), who lives with his daughter Rose (Sissy Spacek) in this rural town, is unable to walk alone without the help of a cane due to poor leg health caused by poor diet. One day, she receives news that her older brother Lyle Strait (Harry Dean Stanton), with whom she has had a rift for many years, has suffered a stroke and is in bed. Alvin wants to resolve his long-standing feud with his brother Lyle and decides to reunite with his brother.

Alvin is physically disabled and unable to drive, so his only means of transportation is a riding lawnmower. Driving a riding lawnmower at speeds of about 5 miles per hour (approximately 8 kilometers per hour), Alvin embarks on a major journey to reminisce about his life, aiming to visit his older brother Lyle, who is far away.
