Unprecedented prosperity due to the industrial revolution

The excellent work ``The Elephant Man'' (1980), which depicts the life of a real person with a disability, is a work that questions the inner pain of minorities and the way people around them should be. The director is the genius David Lynch, who rose to fame with `` Eraserhead '' (1977). The movie is based on the true story of a young man who was called the Elephant Man and faced a harsh fate.

The story is set in late Victorian England, where industrialization was still spreading following the Industrial Revolution in the mid-18th century. The rapid development of the mechanical industry with the invention of the steam engine led to the weakening of agriculture, and the burning of coal increased air pollution. Infectious diseases such as cholera are prevalent in large cities, and bizarre crimes such as Jack the Ripper have become a major problem.

"The Elephant Man" preview

In the film, the decadent London at the end of the 19th century is depicted in a truly fantastic black and white film. The superbly calculated camera work of the talented photographer Freddie Francis provides an extremely realistic depiction of British civilization at the time. What we can see from the black-and-white footage is the recession in Britain at the end of the 19th century. In the latter stages of the Industrial Revolution, Britain was forced into a recession due to the rise of emerging economies such as Germany and the United States.

However, as the country continued to push forward with its industry-based capitalism, the influx of people from rural areas into urban areas caused delays in infrastructure development, and the working environment deteriorated. Sanity was lost. Amid such technological innovations and changes in labor, the interests of the lower and middle classes turned to show houses. A young man, The Elephant Man, travels all over the country as a touring showman, suffering inhuman treatment.
