Variety of songs ① - Thelonious Monk's piano, Anita O'Dea's singing voice

The first performance is "Train and the River" by the Jimmy Giuffre Three, a trio led by Jimmy Giuffre (1921-2008), known for his saxophone and clarinet. Giuffre and TronBob Brookmeyer appear on stage in chic suits. The title sequence overlaps with the image of water, leaving a fresh impression. After the performance, we can see the famous guitarist Jim Hall , whose sound we had only heard, on stage for just a moment.

Next up is Thelonious Monk (1917-1982), a jazz giant known for his unique off-key piano playing and the composer of the classic song " Round About Midnight ." He plays one of his signature songs, " Blue Monk ." However, (unfortunately) instead of just showing his performance, the footage switches to a video of a yacht midway through. This has led to criticism from music fans. Later, a documentary about Monk, " Straight No Chaser " (1988), produced by Clint Eastwood, was also made.

Next up was the legendary saxophonist Sonny Stitt (1924-1982), who was often compared to the genius saxophonist Charlie Parker , who performed "Blues."

The fourth singer to appear is Anita O'Day (1919-2006), one of the leading white female singers in the jazz world, who performs "Sweet Georgia Brown" and "Tea for Two." Her vocals are powerful, using scat singing, and the latter is arranged at a tempo so fast that it is difficult to retain the image of the original song. Her costume, a large black hat and an elegant black and white dress, also has a visual impact, making this a sophisticated scene that shows off the director's talents as a fashion magazine director (according to Anita's autobiography, she bought the dress and hat for this day at a store in Greenwich Village on the recommendation of an Italian salesperson).

Next up is the quartet of George Shearing (1919-2011), a blind pianist from the UK. He is known as the composer of the Us standard number, " Lullaby of Birdland ," but he has also released an album of Latin music, and here he plays the upbeat Latin number " Rondo ."

Dinah Washington (1924-1963), a black female singer known as the "Queen of the Blues," will perform the standard number " All of Me " and put on an energetic stage performance.

Afterwards, saxophonist Gerry Mulligan (1927-1996) and his quartet will perform " As Catch Can ." Mulligan is said to have changed the course of West Coast jazz by forming a piano-less quartet. He also worked on soundtracks, participating with Shelly Manne and Art Farmer in " I Don't Want to Die " (58), directed by Robert Wise, a film about a female death row inmate. His performance was also used effectively in " LA Confidential " (98), a crime film set in Los Angeles in the 1950s.
