Devices that evoke memories of the 90s

The appeal of "mid90s Mid-Nineties" can be broadly divided into two parts. One is that, as symbolized by the skateboard, many elements of 90's pop culture are depicted, from the Super Nintendo, fashion, to the songs in the movie.

Born in 1983, Jonah Hill spent his childhood in the 90s. This film, which features many items that were popular at the time, will bring back nostalgic childhood memories for people of his generation, and at the same time can be enjoyed as a cultural film.

For example, at the beginning, the main character Stevie is wearing a "Street Fighter II" T-shirt. This is complemented by a list of songs selected by Jonah Hill, including Seal 's " Kiss from a Rose " and GZA 's "Liquid Sword " (incidentally, the music was composed by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross). is also involved in Pixar's new film `` Soulful World '' (2020).

It's not just the items that evoke nostalgia. Jonah Hill acquired a fisheye lens from 1995 and used it for filming. Furthermore, in order to evoke the atmosphere of the time, we were particular about shooting the entire film on 16mm film. The unique roughness, warmth, and texture act as a switch that evokes memories in the viewer. The framing is said to be based on Gus Van Sant's `` Elephant '' (2003).

In addition, as mentioned above, the actors were given iPods containing music from the time, as well as skateboarding videos and ` `This is England '' (2006), which Jonah Hill said was an influence on the production of this film. It seems that he conveyed the tone of the movie by showing the movie.

As a side note, the "nostalgia" in American movies and dramas up until now has been based on films set in the 80s, such as " Stranger Things " (2016-) and recent works such as " Blinded by the Light " (1919). I have the impression that it was often depicted in the same way, but the fact that it shifted to the 1990s makes me feel that times have changed.

This is probably due to the rise of creators in their 30s, like Jonah Hill. A24's works include director Ari Aster of " Midsommar " (19), director Trey Edward Schultz of " WAVES " (19), director Lulu Wang of " The Farewell " (19), Directors in their 30s include Robert Eggers, director of The Witch (2015) and The Lighthouse (2019), and Bo Burnham, director of The Eighth Grade (2018). are lined up.

In addition to A24's works, there are other works set in the 90s by creators in their 30s, such as Shia LaBeouf's autobiographical work ` `Honey Boy '' (2019) and `` Hachidori '' (18), which has been a hot topic in Japan. Works are emerging. Olivia Wilde, who made her directorial debut with Booksmart (2019), is currently 36 years old.

In Japan, film directors in their early 30s are active, such as Michito Fujii, director of `` The Journalist '' (2019) and `` The Brightest Roof in the Universe '' (2020), and director Yuki Yamato, director of `` Drowning Knife '' (16). The works of creators who spent their childhood in the 1990s will continue to flourish in the future.
