A Scanner Darkly

In a society where the government is corrupt, a drug called Substance D is rampant. People's lives - basic human rights, human relationships - were completely trampled upon. Keanu Reeves plays an undercover narcotics investigator who plays the role of a junkie and infiltrates deep into the network in order to eradicate this drug, but eventually, as an investigator, he ends up monitoring himself as a junkie. And his personality slowly but surely disintegrates. The friends, played by Robert Downey Jr., Woody Harrelson, Winona Ryder, and Rory Cochrane, also take on the tinge of madness due to their distrust of humanity. Countdown to personality collapse. There's someone watching over me.

Are you really you?

The fact that "you" is "you" can be proven by blood relatives such as immediate family and relatives. Also, friends and colleagues at work must also recognize "Anata" as "Anata." In other words, your existence in society is relative to a third party.

So, is the “you” that is recognized in society the “you” that “you” yourself recognize?

The world of Philip K. Dick

Philip K. Dick is probably best known for writing the novels that served as the basis for numerous masterpiece science fiction films.

" Blade Runner " (1982: based on the original story " Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? "). The story is about Deckard, a "Blade Runner" who chases the escaped artificial humans "replicants," and as he investigates, he becomes skeptical of the distinction between artificial humans and humans. Although it was not clearly stated in the first film, in the sequel, " Blade Runner 2049 " (2017), it is revealed that Deckard himself is a replicant.

" Total Recall " (1990: based on the novel " The Way We Were for Sale "). At the moment a construction worker tries to buy "the memory of traveling to Mars as a super spy," he is suddenly caught up in a conspiracy surrounding Mars, and eventually he challenges the survival of Mars and wins brilliantly. The movie ends here, but isn't the battle itself actually the memory that was sold? This is a story with a question mark.

" Minority Report " (02: Original title: " Minority Report "). In a world where a system called "Precognition" exists that can predict upcoming murders, John Anderton, an employee of the Crime Prevention Bureau, catches a murderer who has not yet killed anyone. The next murderer predicted by Precognition is none other than John Anderton himself. John, who does not yet have any murderous intentions towards anyone, goes on the run to stop his own murder.

Just by lining up the three most famous films based on Dick's novels, you can see that they all have a brilliant theme of "the self that you don't know." Among these film adaptations, the one that most directly confronts the viewer with "the self that you don't know" is "A Scanner Darkly" (2006).
