"Detroit" synopsis

In July 1967, on the third night of the riots, a large number of police and National Guardsmen rushed into the Algiers Motel, crowded with young black patrons, after receiving reports of gunshots. The police then begin a violent interrogation of a young man who happens to be at the motel. Eventually, it develops into an abnormal "The Game of death" and invites new tragedies...

From the tragedy of a single singer to a grand historical drama

Screenwriter Mark Boal, who wrote The Hurt Locker (2008) and Zero Dark Thirty (2012), originally envisioned Detroit as the story of musician/singer Larry Reed. Reed, who was a founding member of the local Detroit vocal group The Dramatics, was involved in the 1967 Detroit riots and encountered a tragic incident at the Algiers Motel in downtown Detroit. He gave up his bright path to becoming a pop star.

However, the completed film ``Detroit'' featured Larry Reed, played by Algee Smith, as a main character, but it also included a broader story of the five-day Detroit riots and the trial that followed. It has become a group drama.

According to Ball's statement, he met Larry Reid himself and heard about the "Algiers Motel Incident," which Reid had hardly talked about for 50 years, and as he researched other parties involved, he discovered one person. He says he was frustrated that he couldn't narrow it down to just a story. Ball's previous works were based on real-life incidents and focused on a single character as the main character who propelled the story forward, but ``Detroit'' marks his first attempt at a group drama. As a result, ``Detroit'' is a work that makes you feel the weight and horror of reality that rivals the vast amount of historical material.

The Detroit riots, which were the inspiration for the riot scene in the science fiction film RoboCop , are considered to be the largest riot in American history, with 43 people dead, 1,189 injured, and 7,200 arrested. Enraged by police raids on bars in black neighborhoods, the people turned into mobs, leading to anarchy with rampant looting and burning.

The "Algiers Motel Incident" occurred in the midst of this. When the police heard gunshots coming from the motel, they raided the building and found mainly black teenagers and two white girls staying there, and the white police officers, who had a strong sense of discrimination, questioned them.・Three unarmed black boys were murdered by interrogating them while inflicting torture and abuse.

The aforementioned Larry Reed happened to be taking shelter at the "Algiers Motel" to escape the commotion of the riot. Reed participated in this work as a consultant along with two other people who encountered the incident. He performed a duet on the theme song "Grow" with Algee Smith, who played himself. This was the first public appearance in half a century for Reed, who left The Dramatics after the incident and had been singing in a choir in memory of the victims.
