Toshiro Mifune turned down the offer to become “Mr. Miyagi”

I have always thought this. It is well known that Toshiro Mifune turned down the offer to play Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars (1977), but one wonders how much his career as an actor would have changed if he had accepted the offer. .

There is no doubt that he is an international star representing Japan. He has also appeared in many overseas productions, including `` Grand Prix '' (66), `` Inferno in the Pacific '' (68), and `` Red Sun '' (71). On the other hand, I missed the once-in-a-lifetime Being There of ``Star Wars'' and played the role of Anakin Skywalker (Darth Vader's unmasked character ) in ``Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi '' (1983). He even turned down an offer for a new job. Nothing is too bad! I received an offer to be a submarine captain in `` 1941 '' (79), so why did I turn it down?

“The Karate Kid” preview

No, his biggest regret may be not the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi in ``Star Wars'' (1977), but that he turned down the role of Mr. Miyagi in ``The Karate Kid.'' Director John G. Avildsen had in mind Toshiro Mifune for the role of ``an apartment manager who usually loves bonsai, but is actually an expert at karate.'' However, that desire did not come true, and after an audition, Noriyuki Pat Morita was awarded the role of Miyagi.

A second-generation Japanese American from Okinawa, he began his career as a stand-up comedian. After appearing in commercials and as a guest on TV, he is a hard worker who got his break as Arnold in the youth comedy drama ``Happy Days.'' He is short, and has an old face that makes it hard to believe that he was around 50 years old at the time the photo was taken. Both his appearance and his career are the complete opposite of Toshiro Mifune. Tosen, upper management is reluctant to hire Pat Morita. However, his performance at the audition was overwhelming. There, there was the unmistakable Mr. Miyagi.

Pat Morita was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in this film. His appearance in ``The Karate Kid'' made the movie much more convincing and humorous.
