High school student appeals directly to Coppola for film adaptation

In the early 1980s, a previously unfamiliar word buzzed around the film world. "Young Adult (YA)" and "Brat Pack."

In the United States, young adults in their teens to early twenties began to be called young adults, and YA novels, YA music, and YA fashion, all of which reflected their thoughts, created a boom. Young people are always the ones who set trends, but this word has not become that common in Japan. Still, it was covered by many media outlets, and there was an atmosphere in which a new cultural movement was being formed.

The movie that pioneered the YA boom was 1983's The Outsider. The original work was a best-selling YA novel, and an article at the time said that two out of three middle and high school students in the United States had read it. The original author, S.E. Hinton, began writing `` The Outsider '' at the age of 15 and completed it at the age of 16. It had a strong appeal to the same generation.

Naturally, it was eagerly awaited to be made into a movie, and Francis Ford Coppola was chosen to take the lead. Coppola achieved great success with the two The Godfather films (1972-74) and Apocalypse Now (1979), but after the commercial failure of One from the Heart (1982), he decided to create his own studio. sold. The one he took on as a comeback was ``The Outsider.''

“The Outsider” preview

On most days, the publisher receives over 1,000 letters from readers requesting that the film be made into a movie, and at a high school in California, the class votes to find Coppola the best director. When they sent the letter and the original story to Coppola, Coppola was moved. At the time, Coppola said, ``I didn't film young people. I created a new type of film by thinking and discussing with young people.''

The Outsider is set in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1965. "Grease" is a young man living in poverty, and "Sosh" is a young man who is rich. This is a youth group drama in which two groups are eventually led to tragedy.

Although it is Coppola's work, if you evaluate this film calmly, it is doubtful whether it can be called a masterpiece. However, when we look back at the history of Hollywood, it is rare to find a case in which a movie like this one produced a ``star of tomorrow.'' In 1983, in Japan, it ranked first in the film magazine Screen's top ten readers' list, and its star-like charm captivated audiences.
