Did Gremlins have their origins in World War II?

Do you know the origin of “Gremlins”? If we trace it back strictly, we can probably trace it back to folklore about goblins and fairies from all over the world. However, if we were to limit ourselves to the name itself, it was surprisingly only in recent years that it suddenly became popular. It's surprising that it happened during World War II.

At the time, British and American air force pilots used to say that whenever equipment malfunctioned, it was the work of Gremlins! The anecdote was published as a picture book by Roald Dahl , known for his works such as `` The Secret of the Chocolate Factory, '' and was also featured in an animation of `` Bugs Bunny ,'' the Warner Bros. mascot.

Planes, malfunctions, mysterious creatures... If you are familiar with the 1980s, this particular movie will immediately pop into your mind. Yes, this is the fourth episode of the nostalgic omnibus movie `` The Twilight Zone '' (1983) (directed by George Miller of the `` Mad Max '' series). This is a story about a man who has a fear of flying and witnesses the shadow of a Monster that keeps appearing evil outside a passenger plane. The man yells, ``There's a mysterious Monster!'' but no one on board believes him. ``Gremlins'' was in the preparatory stage in parallel with the production of this episode, and both films were produced by Steven Spielberg. Considering these circumstances, it is natural that they influenced each other, and it may be possible for the audience to perceive these as ``sister stories about Gremlins.''

"Gremlins"

It all started with a sample script written by a university student.

In the early 1980s, the original idea for Gremlins was brought to Hollywood by a college student. His name was Chris Columbus, who was studying film production at New York University at the time. He later made his directorial debut with `` Home Alone '' and became an instant hit maker.

As part of his marketing efforts to the industry, he created a sample script for Gremlins. In other words, this is a way to appeal to important people in the industry, saying, ``I have this kind of talent and ability.'' Of course, he never dreamed that it would be made into a movie as it was, so it was a very simple work consisting of only a synopsis and partial lighting.

This sample was circulated in Hollywood and attracted some attention, but it was difficult to find a buyer. However, something happens here that changes Columbus' life forever. The famous Spielberg exclaimed, ``This is interesting!'' and bought his talent at a high price.
