Those with dignity and those who rebel - two great actors with outstanding individuality
Dubert is a well-bred man who follows military rules, and Ferro is a hot-blooded and rough-tempered man. In casting these contrasting characters, Scott woos two up-and-coming actors. The former includes Keith Carradine, who gained attention for his work directed by Robert Altman, such as ``Bowie & Keach'' (1974) and `` Nashville '' (1975). The latter is Harvey Keitel, who rose to prominence with Martin Scorsese's works such as `` Mean Streets '' (1973) and ` `Taxi Driver '' (1976).
Carradine had just won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for the song ``Nashville,'' and was in the spotlight at the time. With his background in horseback riding and swordsmanship, he is perfect for the role of Dubert. Also, while Dubert starts a family and has children over the course of the story, Carradine was also good at interacting with child actors, and was in Contact with them even off-set. Incidentally, Dubert's young sons were played by Ridley Scott's sons Jake and Luke.

Keitel, on the other hand, took some time to be persuaded to appear. His reaction to the offer was, ``You're asking me, a New Yorker, to play the role of an old horseman?'' However, Scott believed that Keitel's rebellious personality was most important for the role of Fellow, and through earnest persuasion he obtained Keitel's consent to appear in the role. Keitel had no knowledge of horseback riding or swordsmanship, but through intensive training leading up to filming, Keitel was able to make the role of Faroe his own.
Other performers also had Scott's wishes fulfilled. The roles of their superiors include Albert Finney and Edward Fox, who are famous enough to have appeared on the stage of the Royal Theater in England. Up-and-coming actors who would later break out, such as Tom Conti in ` `Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence '' (1983) and Pete Postlethwaite in `` The Usual Suspects '' (1995), also appear, albeit in small roles. Also, Christina Raines, who played Dubert's wife, was Carradine's girlfriend at the time. One of the highlights is their harmonious co-starring, which brings peace to the brutal story.
Duel, duel, more duel... Scott's world, where aesthetics live.
