“M*A*S*H” preview

The original is a non-fiction work by Richard Hooker, a doctor who served in the Korean War. After being asked to review the book, screenwriter Ring Lardner Jr., who had read it during the galley stage, recommended film producer Ingo Preminger to make it into a film. Preminger brought the project to Richard Zanuck of 20th Century Fox, and production on the film began. Lardner, who was hired as a screenwriter, was once forced out of Hollywood due to the so-called "Red Scare," which excluded communists. His rebellious spirit was expressed in the introduction of anti-war ideas that were not present in the original work. It was after this that Altman was selected as director.
