Clint Hill, the man who failed to protect the president

The project has completely reached a dead end. Apple has been pitching not only major companies but also independent film companies, but has not received a favorable response. Apple gave up on Friedman's original idea and developed a new scenario by Jeff Maguire. For the first time, a new protagonist is born: the man who failed to protect John F. Kennedy, Frank Horrigan.

The character is clearly inspired by real-life agent Clint Hill, who was present at the scene of President Kennedy's assassination. That fateful day, November 22, 1963, in Dallas. Kennedy and his wife, Jacqueline, rode in a convertible limousine, with Hill right behind them. Sensing danger from the second bullet, he rushes to the limousine, but too late, a third bullet pierces Kennedy's head. He pushes a panicked Jacqueline back into the car and covers her with his own shield. But it was all too late.

Later, Clint Hill said on a TV show that he felt responsible for the president's death. What will he do if he becomes a tragic hero and has another Being There to save the president? Thanks to Jeff Maguire's delusions, ``In the Line of Fire'' was reborn into a scenario with a more dramatic framework.

However, even then, it did not become a movie easily. Despite approaching big names such as Robert Redford, Sean Connery, and Warren Beatty, the project never made any progress. By the time film production company Castle Rock Entertainment finally moved forward with a $1 million deal for Maguire's script, a decade had passed. Jeff Apple recalls it this way:

"Ten years of back and forth has paid off. I'm very proud of the results and I hope this can be an inspiration to many people around the world." ( Los Angeles Times article) Excerpt from)

By the way, the real Secret Service served as a consultant for this film. This is the first time they have fully cooperated in the production of a film. Thus, Apple's boyhood dream of making a Secret Service movie became a reality with the support of the Secret Service.
