A project born from the producer's childhood memories

Since his debut, Eastwood has continued to play immortal heroes using his strong body as a weapon. However, since the 1990s, when he was born in 1930 and reached his 60th birthday, ``old age'' has gradually crept into his roles. In `` Sightings '' (1997), he wears reading glasses because he doesn't look his age, and in `` Space Cowboys '' (2000), he is ridiculed as a ``ripe (old) staff'' when he tries to travel to space, and in ` `Blood Work '' (02). Eventually, he ended up having a heart attack.

And ``In the Line of Fire'' (1993), in which a veteran Secret Service agent who was unable to protect John F. Kennedy confronts an assassin plotting to assassinate the president, is also a work on this line. is. Chase John Malkovich's assassin and you'll be breathless in no time. If you take a nap in the office, people will mistake it for a heart attack. It can be said that this is Eastwood's earliest work to confront the subject of "aging" head-on.

“In the Line of Fire” trailer

However, I was under the impression that this film was a project by Eastwood. But it was actually born out of filmmaker Jeff Apple's childhood memories. At first, there wasn't even a setting like JFK or the old agent. The trigger was an incident in Miami in 1964. A special car carrying President Lyndon Johnson drives through downtown. Secret Service agents surround Johnson. Boy Jeff Apple is deeply moved by his majestic appearance. How cool!

Apple eventually started a film production company in Los Angeles and decided to make a movie about the Secret Service, which is still fresh in his mind. I asked my college classmate Ken Friedman to develop the scenario, and it took about a year and a half to complete. Finally, he makes a pitch to Hollywood.

Columbia Pictures showed interest. Starring Dustin Hoffman, his directorial credits include ``Agatha'' (1979) and `` Sing!''. Planning begins with a top-notch lineup including Michael Apted, known for `` For the Love of Loretta '' (1980). A long-held dream has finally come true! But then, a week later, Columbia's management team changed hands. Promises are easily broken.
