“Cruella= A story to release the sealed self”

The live-action movie ` `Cruella '' (21), which stars Cruella , the villain of ``101 Dalmatians '' (61), will be released in theaters on May 27th and distributed on Disney Plus the following day on the 28th (* (Charging is required in addition to the monthly usage fee) has started. Before the spread of the new coronavirus, theatrical release would have been the only option, but from now on it seems like this method will become Walt Disney Studios' basic policy (" Black Widow " (2021) is also in the same format) .

The platform on which a work is enjoyed will depend on the individual's situation, environment, and tastes and preferences, but many works are ``designed to be released in theaters,'' and the scale of the images and sound quality may vary. Considering that even the smallest detail cannot be fully expressed on a consumer console, the only way to fully realize its potential is by watching it in a theater. In particular, ``Cruella'' has a structure in which stylish images and music intertwine throughout the film, and it is certainly a work that looks great on screen.

Of course, in the case of distribution, in addition to its ease of use, the strength is that it can be enjoyed over and over again, and it appeals to collectors. We may now be living in an era where viewers have to choose which one to choose, or whether to enjoy both formats. Please note that I am writing this review after seeing the movie in theaters, so I hope you will read on with that in mind.

"Cruella" preview

First, let's start with the synopsis of this work. The setting is England. Estella, a girl who aspires to be a fashion designer, has a genius aesthetic sense but is also quick to get into fights, and her mother tells her not to call her ``Cruella'' (a nickname that means ``cruel''). ” he was scolded. One day, Estella became too reckless and was expelled from school. He and his mother try to make a fresh start in London, but her mother is killed in an accident at a celebrity party. Estella, who became a street child overnight, meets orphans Horace and Jasper and forms a trio. Make a living by stealing.

Time passed and it was the 1970s. As an adult, Estella (Emma Stone) begins working at her dream department store through the arrangement of Horace (Paul Walter Hauser) and Jasper (Joel Fry), but her days are filled with odd jobs. However, when he is discovered by the charismatic designer Baroness (Emma Thompson), he finally begins to take his first steps as a designer. However, her relationship with the careless Baroness deteriorates, and her sealed self, ``Cruella'', awakens again.

What's interesting about this work, which is a prequel to ``101 Dalmatians'' and depicts the secret story of Cruella's birth, is that it depicts Estella/ Cruella as a curve ball with ``multiple personalities''. For those who know ``101 Dalmatians,'' this approach may come as quite a surprise, but when you look at it in detail, you can understand that it is a truly legitimate methodology for a ``Disney live-action adaptation.'' Therefore, this time I would like to think about ``Cruella'' from the perspective of Disney's strategy and format, which are deeply related to the content of this work.
