Reenacting old musical movies

"You'll Never Know" has since been sung by many artists. It has been sung by Frank Sinatra, Rosemary Clooney, Bing Crosby, Doris Day, Bobby Darin, and recently Michael Bublé. The most famous one is Barbra Streisand. Her first song, `` You'll Never Know ,'' was recorded at the age of 13. During Barbra's concert tour in 2000, there was a stylish opening performance in which she performed a duet with the song she recorded at age 13 and her current version, and that's how important this song is to Barbra.

“The Shape of Water” (C)2017 Twentieth Century Fox

The fantasy scene in The Shape of Water where "You'll Never Know" plays for the second time is staged as a black-and-white musical. A half-merman creature, Eliza's love interest, dances with a full orchestra in the background. Director Guillermo del Toro, referring to Stanley Donen 's musical film, made this scene, which would otherwise seem strange, romantic. Director Stanley Donen is the man behind many masterpieces of musical films, including `` Singin ' in the Rain.'' It is true that the images using Crane's camera are reminiscent of the musical films of Donen's era, but the romantic choreography seems to be inspired by Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, not Donen's work.

Eliza's dress in this scene is a vintage 1930s dress reminiscent of Ginger Rogers. In this scene, Sally Hawkins, who plays Eliza, who doesn't speak in the movie, sings "You'll Never Know," but this is lip-synced. The soundtrack used was sung by soprano Renée Fleming for this work.
