“Anonymous Man” created by Eastwood

The "Anonymous Man" played by Clint Eastwood can be said to be a character created by Eastwood. Due to a tight budget, he was asked to provide his own costumes, so he bought jeans at a sports shop in Hollywood, a hat at a costume shop in Santa Monica, and a black cigar at a store in Beverly Hills. The boots and gun belt are the same ones worn in ``Rawhide''. Normally, one would prepare several pieces of the same type of clothing in case of an unexpected situation, but it is not possible to take such a leisurely approach. Everything is in a state of flux.

Furthermore, Eastwood directly talked to Leone, saying, ``The lines are too wordy.'' He creates a character who speaks only the bare minimum of lines and is too quiet for a main character. In the first place, it would be unthinkable for an actor to reduce his or her own lines. This is because it is an act related to one's identity as an actor. From this point on, Eastwood may have been equipped with the perspective of a director, able to see the work from a bird's-eye view and make the best choices, rather than that of an actor.

Leone and Eastwood were not on friendly terms during filming. Leone was rude to the lead actor he did not want, and Eastwood sometimes walked off the set in anger. Still, the two men respected each other's talents. Otherwise, they would not have teamed up for the "Dollar Trilogy" that followed " For a Few Dollars More " (1965) and " The Good, the Bad and the Ugly a Few Dollars More" (1966).

``A Fistful of Dollars'' is not a film created by a single genius. The disparate talents of Sergio Leone and Clint Eastwood clashed with each other's egos, and at times resonated with each other, giving the work a bolder outline.
