“The Dark Knight” changed the standard for “realism” in hero movies!

What Nolan tried to do with ``The Dark Knight'' was to eliminate as much as possible the comic-like and unrealistic elements from ``Batman,'' which was originally a hero movie based on an American comic book. The fact that Batman himself does not originally possess superpowers and is able to act as a superhero through his mental and physical training and high-tech suits has been teased in films such as Justice League (2017), but The Dark Knight There are also no strange enemies that don't seem to exist in the real world.

The Joker, played by Heath Ledger, is never revealed in the movie, but he is no different from any other normal human being, except that he is a psychopathic criminal who wears make-up. The Joker's criminal act at the beginning is a legitimate bank robbery disguised with a mask, and the other enemies that appear are the same as those who appear in ordinary crime movies, such as the mafia and unscrupulous accountants. In fact, in ``The Dark Knight,'' Batman, who wears a bat mask, is the most ``monster'' in the movie.

It can be said that Nolan's efforts to thoroughly "realize" American comic book films meant that subsequent hero films were always challenged to find a compromise with reality. Hero movies are no longer allowed to be innocent fantasies, and the individuality and orientation of the work has come to be determined by the distribution of ``possible'' and ``impossible.'' In this respect, the merits and demerits of the influence of The Dark Knight will continue to be an essential part of the debate for and against it. The Dark Knight's role in the hero movie genre is similar to Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan (1998) in its portrayal of battlefields.

`` Dunkirk '' is Nolan's response to depicting a battlefield, taking a different approach from ``Saving Private Ryan. ''
